9 High School Tips

These tips are mainly targeted towards 9th graders (freshman). But anyone can use these tips. I’m going to be a sophomore and I use these tips.

1. School Orientation
You should defiantly go to your schools orientation. I know my school orientation is coming up and mom and I are going to it. Most school orientations are long, at least mine is. Like for mine its 2 hours…I know…But It’s split into two parts so like the first part is where some staff introduces themselves and they talk about classes and stuff like that. Then the second part is the school tour which is where they show you around like where the cafeteria, gym, etc is. Also at some schools orientations they give you your schedule so you know you’re classes. So basically go to your school orientation if even if you’re older siblings went to the same school that you’re going to because maybe the school has changed a few things.

2. Pay Attention during class
Even when you just turn your head and say something to your friend quickly you’re going to be missing something. You never know it could’ve been something that was very important. If you don’t pay attention then you’re not going to understand/know anything. The teacher usually is explaining something that might be on a future test or for that night’s homework. My Spanish teacher did that at least like whatever we learned in class that day we had a worksheet on the same subject that we just learned…if that makes sense. So defiantly pay attention to what your teacher says during class.

3. Be Organized
I would say that color coordination is the best way to stay organized. Most people do this also it’s when you have the same colored folder, notebook, and/or binder for one subject. Like Say for English you’re going with blue so you’ll have a blue folder, blue notebook, and/or blue binder. This also saves time at your locker so instead of having to open your binder and looking for the class name your already know that English class is blue. It might take some time to get used to which subject/class is what color. I also keep a homework folder, so I have separate colored folder this year it’s red, last year it was pink but anyways whatever color you have. I personally like having a separate folder for homework because for some reason everyone always looses their homework, including me. Last thing for staying organized is write down your homework, most schools give out agendas which have space for you to write down your homework for each class. That way you don’t forget that you have a paper to write for English or something.

4. Don’t Procrastinate
Don’t wait for the last minute to do homework, projects, and study. Eventually you’re going to have to do it so it might as well be now than later, and get it over with. If you’re going to wait yah you might have a good time at the mall but in the back of your mind you’re really like oh… I need to start my science project and its going to bug you until you do it. Plus when you do it first then you feel really good about yourself, so DON’T PROCRASTINATE!!

5. Make Good Chooses
Make good friends, good class decisions, actually go to class and school (No Skipping!). By making good class decisions I mean like if you want to push yourself a little harder then take a honors or AP class, my Freshman year we couldn’t take any AP classes but we had pre-AP and Honors classes. Make good friends, don’t just befriends with someone because they are popular and stuff because later on in life you most likely won’t be friends with the same people you are with now. I mean you might but a lot of people don’t even remember them, this is because you might go to different colleges and you’ll move on with your life. Make sure that you make friends that you can trust and that will actually be there for you when you need them.

6. Join Clubs/Sports
This is a great way to meet new people and make friends that you might have stuff in common. If you like soccer then join your schools soccer team. Schools have lots of different clubs that you can join if they don’t have one that you like then ask your counselor or someone if you can create a club. Joining clubs and sports look really good on college applications because they are extracurricular activities. Also you might have some classes with some of the people in the club/sport you joined.

7. Bad Teachers
I’ve had a lot of experience with this, like my freshman Geometry teacher was horrible he couldn’t teach or anything like I wasn’t the only one who didn’t like him. If you’ve heard that teacher you have is bad or anything then ask your counselor to switch you out of that class and into a new class. Make sure that you do it at the beginning of the school year or before school starts.

8. Be Yourself
Don’t act like anyone but yourself. Why take more of your effort to be someone you’re not when you don’t have to take any effort by just being yourself…if that makes sense. Enough said.
"Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else. "

9. Relax
No need to stress about high school. (Even though you most likely will) Everyone has to go through high school and they all made it out alive. Don’t worry about what’s going to happen in your next class or the next day of school, just live in the moment.

Hope these tips are helpful to you. Also if you have any questions I’ll be happy to help.

  1. Dear Lifeblogger19,
I go to a relatively small high school,so everybody's pretty close. Well, everytime someone is talking i just want to stop what i'm doing and go chill with them, it really puts me behind schedule. But i can't help it!! I'm outgoing, and i always say to myself that i have no classes on Friday so that's my catch up day but it is so hard to actually catch up. The first quater is over and because of my outgoingness i got all c's and d's an some b's. I really need some advice! Thanks for your time, and please respond.

  2. Dear DogFreak61,
First I want to thank you for commenting on my post. Now for advice, I totally understand your problem and many people have this problem including me. Just think to yourselve that is it really worth it to talk to your friends during class and get a bad grade, or is it better to talk to your friends after class and pay attention during class. Yes I know that teachers can be very boring and they go on and on about stuff but the stuff that they are saying is very important to know, for the most part. Ask your teacher if you can switch your seat and sit either in the front of the class room or just some where away from your friends, tell your teacher that you are having trouble focusing during class. Make sure that you are taking notes on what the teacher is saying. Also if you still have trouble focusing during class go to your teacher after school and get help on the things that you missed during class. I have a problem with this, going to my teachers and asking them for help but I'm working on it and there is nothing wrong with asking for help. Just try your hardest to focus your attention away from your friend during class for the next quarter and see how much your grades improve. I hope that my advice helps and let me know if this helps or if you need help with anything else.
